Arnhem, Nijmegen, Zutphen, Deventer and numerous smaller towns are individually identified, together with the Rhine, Waal, Meuse and IJssel rivers. Portions of Utrecht, Overijssel, Brabant and neighboring German lands also appear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe finely engraved map is distinguished by two elaborate figural compositions. At upper left, the arms of Gelderland are accompanied by allegorical figures representing military power, agriculture and regional prosperity. At lower right, a group in contemporary Dutch costume appears beside a numbered key identifying the principal administrative divisions of the region. A compass rose occupies the waters of the Zuiderzee.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrederick de Wit was among the leading mapmakers and publishers working in Amsterdam during the seventeenth century. His maps were prized for their geographic detail, bold engraving and decorative cartouches and were included in some of the finest Dutch atlases of the period.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOriginal copperplate engraving on laid paper with old hand coloring. The engraved image remains substantially complete and strongly printed. Fair condition, with pronounced age toning, damp staining, foxing, marginal deterioration and several holes and areas of paper loss along the upper and left edges. Expected center fold and evidence of old reinforcement.
