He conducted the first survey of Elizabethtown, served as one of its earliest trustees, represented the region in the Kentucky Senate, served as clerk of the county and circuit courts, and held the rank of major during the War of 1812.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf particular historical interest, the Kaplan Collection at the University of Pennsylvania preserves another Ben Helm-signed summons from the \u003cstrong\u003esame Hart v. Key lawsuit\u003c\/strong\u003e, issued in April 1815. The institutional record identifies the case as involving a debt owed by Key to Hart.
