Grant\u003c\/strong\u003e and conveys the president’s private reaction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFish writes:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“I read your letter to the President, who desires me to express his gratification with the kind \u0026amp; friendly expressions which it contains.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/blockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFish further explains that Grant was especially gratified after learning about Munn’s standing and character, which demonstrated “how disinterested \u0026amp; how sincere” his appreciation was of the president’s “character \u0026amp; his course.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWritten only six weeks after Grant’s second inauguration, the letter provides an intimate glimpse into the president’s response to contemporary judgments of his leadership. It also demonstrates Fish’s close relationship with Grant and his role as a trusted intermediary between the president and influential New Yorkers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHamilton Fish was among the most accomplished American secretaries of state.
