1824 William Eustis Signed Massachusetts Militia Commission — Governor & Revolutionary War Veteran
Rare Original 1824 Massachusetts Military Commission Signed by Governor William Eustis
An important original Massachusetts military commission dated March 23, 1824, appointing the recipient Captain in the Second Regiment of Infantry, Second Brigade, Third Division of the Militia of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
The commission was issued by His Excellency William Eustis, Governor and Commander in Chief of Massachusetts, and is boldly signed by Eustis as “Wm Eustis.” It is additionally endorsed by Edward D. Bangs, Secretary of the Commonwealth, and bears the impressive embossed seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
The document states that the recipient had been elected to the office of Captain on March 19, 1824, and formally commissions him to exercise the duties and authority of the position under the laws and military regulations of the Commonwealth.
William Eustis (1753–1825) was a distinguished American physician, Revolutionary War surgeon, politician and statesman. He served as a physician and surgeon during the American Revolution, later represented Massachusetts in Congress, served as Secretary of War under President James Madison, and was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 1823. He remained governor until his death in 1825.
This commission therefore represents Eustis during the final years of his life and during his tenure as Massachusetts governor. It also provides a tangible record of the organization of the Massachusetts militia in the early Federal period.
Particularly noteworthy is the large embossed Commonwealth seal, which remains clearly visible despite the document's age and handling.
Historical associations: William Eustis • Massachusetts • Revolutionary War • Governor of Massachusetts • Secretary of War • Massachusetts Militia • Early American Military History • Federal Period
Condition: Good. Original 1824 paper with substantial period folds, foxing and staining, localized paper losses and small holes at the fold intersections, and general age wear. The embossed Commonwealth seal remains present and attractive, and the important William Eustis signature remains clear and legible. The document has not been excessively restored and retains its original historical character.
A scarce and highly desirable signed Massachusetts gubernatorial military commission from the early Republic.
