Measuring 22 3/4 x 32 1/4, "The Hall of Representatives in the New Extension of the Capitol at Washington" was published in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper on June 12, 1858. Note the reverse of the illustration. This print provides details of the newly completed House Chamber, which had opened just months before. It is also considered the earliest image in the House Collection that includes Pages, who are small boys seen sitting alongside the lowest level of the Speaker's rostrum. The print shows the chairs and desks furnishing the new chamber. Pages had been working in the Capitol for almost 50 years by the late 1850s. The House of Representatives first used this chamber on December 16, 1857. The chamber was designed by Thomas U. Walter, the architect of the U.S. Capitol extension. The new extension was needed to accommodate the growing number of legislators as the United States expanded.
