Offered is an original February 22, 1837 New York State military commission appointing Garrit H. Striker Major General of the 28th Division of Infantry, with the rank dating from February 17, 1837.
The beautifully engraved document is issued in the name of the State of New-York and bears the original signature of William L. Marcy, then Governor of New York and Commander-in-Chief of the state's militia. Marcy would later serve as United States Secretary of War under President James K. Polk and Secretary of State under President Franklin Pierce, making his signature particularly desirable to collectors of American political and military history.
The commission also carries the contemporary endorsement/signature of Allan Macdonald, Adjutant-General, who served in that office during the period. New York State Library holdings document Macdonald's official military activities and orders during 1837.
