1837 NEW YORK MILITARY COMMISSION — MAJOR GENERAL GARRIT H. STRIKER — SIGNED BY GOVERNOR WILLIAM L. MARCY
Exceptional Original New York State Military Commission — 1837
Signed by Marcy - Cooined term "spoils system"
Offered is an original February 22, 1837 New York State military commission appointing Garrit H. Striker Major General of the 28th Division of Infantry, with the rank dating from February 17, 1837.
The beautifully engraved document is issued in the name of the State of New-York and bears the original signature of William L. Marcy, then Governor of New York and Commander-in-Chief of the state's militia. Marcy would later serve as United States Secretary of War under President James K. Polk and Secretary of State under President Franklin Pierce, making his signature particularly desirable to collectors of American political and military history.
The commission also carries the contemporary endorsement/signature of Allan Macdonald, Adjutant-General, who served in that office during the period. New York State Library holdings document Macdonald's official military activities and orders during 1837.
The commission appoints Garrit H. Striker as Major General of the 28th Division of Infantry, providing a fascinating glimpse into the organization of the New York militia immediately before and during the politically turbulent period surrounding the Patriot War of 1837–1838.
The document retains its impressive embossed New York State seal, engraved typography, manuscript endorsements and original signatures. The reverse also contains contemporary administrative notations.
An excellent piece of New York State, militia, political and military history, and an especially attractive document for collectors of governors' signatures, American military commissions and 19th-century governmental documents.
