1776 Revolutionary War Gun Purchase — Signed by Noah Phelps — Oliver Ellsworth Handwriting Attribution — R&R COA
Simsbury, Connecticut, August 14–15, 1776
Original Revolutionary War manuscript authorizing payment to Captain Noah Phelps for a firearm purchased for the use of the State of Connecticut, issued just weeks after the Declaration of Independence.
Simsbury selectmen Joseph Tuller, Ezekiel Humphrey, and Samuel Hays direct the Connecticut Pay Table to pay Phelps “fifty two Shillings” for “one Gun we Bought of him for the Use of this State.”
The reverse bears Phelps’s dated acknowledgment of payment, signed “Noah Phelps Capt.”, together with additional contemporary accounting notations.
Phelps helped organize the expedition that captured Fort Ticonderoga in May 1775 and is remembered for gathering intelligence before the attack. This document illustrates another essential part of the Revolutionary effort: obtaining arms for state service.
Accompanied by an R&R Enterprises Certificate of Authenticity identifying unsigned handwriting by Oliver Ellsworth, the future chief justice and influential architect of the federal judiciary. The document bears Phelps’s signature; the Ellsworth attribution concerns unsigned handwriting.
Size: Approximately 8½ × 4 inches.
Condition: Light toning and scattered soiling, original folds with wear and small separations at the edges, and minor edge imperfections. Writing remains clear and legible. The accompanying certificate notes fragile folds.
A compelling 1776 manuscript combining military arms procurement, Noah Phelps’s wartime signature, and an authenticated attribution of Oliver Ellsworth handwriting.
