March 30, 1945 United Nations Information Office Press Release—Pre-Charter List of Allied Nations
An exceptionally early United Nations document issued while World War II was still being fought and before the permanent United Nations organization formally existed.
This original one-page press release was issued by the United Nations Information Office, 610 Fifth Avenue, New York, on March 30, 1945. It lists the countries that had signed or adhered to the wartime Declaration by United Nations, the January 1942 agreement binding the Allied powers to employ their resources against the Axis and refrain from negotiating a separate peace.
Forty-seven countries appear in the typed list. Three additional nations—Ukraine, White Russia (Belarus), and Argentina—have been added in period ink as numbers 48 through 50. The release also gives special recognition to Denmark, explaining that although its king and government remained under occupation, the Danish minister in Washington had declared the adherence of free Danes to the Allied cause.
Dated less than one month before the San Francisco Conference opened, this document captures the moment when the wartime Allied coalition was evolving into the permanent United Nations. At the time of its issuance, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was still alive, Germany had not surrendered, the UN Charter had not been signed, and the modern organization had not yet formally come into existence.
A scarce and historically revealing document concerning the origins of the United Nations and the closing weeks of World War II.
