1780 Revolutionary War Connecticut Payment Order to Ensign Samuel Mears — Signed by Samuel Lyman and Samuel Wyllys
Original manuscript Connecticut Pay-Table order dated May 24, 1780, directing Treasurer John Lawrence to pay Ensign Samuel Mears two hundred pounds and charge the payment to the state.
Signed by Pay-Table official Samuel Lyman and countersigned diagonally “Sam Wyllys Auditor” by Samuel Wyllys, a Continental Army colonel. The reverse retains contemporary docketing recording the recipient, amount, and date, together with an additional endorsement appearing to read “Stephen Mears.”
A tangible record of Connecticut’s Revolutionary War financial administration, documenting a substantial payment to a named officer during the struggle for American independence.
Condition: Original folds, scattered foxing and discoloration, and minor edge wear. A small irregular hole with darkened edges affects the flourish near the opening word “Pay,” possibly resulting from ink corrosion. The principal text, date, amount, and official signatures remain readable. One sheet, with manuscript docketing and endorsement on the reverse.
