1850 KINGDOM OF SARDINIA NATIONALITY CERTIFICATE — LYON CONSULATE — SARDINIAN ROYAL ARMS — CONSUL ANDRÉ D'ANDREIS
Rare Original 1850 Certificate of Nationality — Kingdom of Sardinia
Offered is an original September 18, 1850 Certificate of Nationality issued by the Consulate General of the Kingdom of Sardinia at Lyon, France, identifying Joseph Angelo Morello, born at Lyon on November 10, 1829, as a subject of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
The beautifully printed document bears the royal arms of Sardinia, including the crowned shield and elaborate military trophies, together with the official consular seal. It is numbered No. 146 and records Morello's registration with the Sardinian Consulate.
Of particular historical interest, the certificate states that Morello was entered under No. 13 in the consular register and that he was to participate in the October 1850 “tirage,” or conscription lottery, in his commune of origin. Thus, this document provides a fascinating connection between Sardinian citizenship, the Sardinian consular system and military conscription.
The certificate was issued during the final decade before Italian unification, when the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont was emerging as the principal Italian state that would lead the movement toward a unified Italy.
The document is signed by the Consul-General of Sardinia at Lyon, Chevalier André d'Andreis. Contemporary published records identify André d'Andreis as Consul General of Sardinia at Lyon.
A wonderful and highly decorative example of pre-unification Italian diplomatic and consular history, particularly suitable for collectors of Italian history, the House of Savoy, Risorgimento material, diplomatic documents, passports and nationality certificates.
