1929 Franklin D. Roosevelt Signed Extradition Document as New York Governor
An exceptionally early document signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt as Governor of New York, dated January 7, 1929—only one week after he assumed office and more than four years before beginning his historic presidency.
Issued by the Executive Chamber in Albany, this partly printed document certifies that Governor Roosevelt had honored a requisition from the governor of New Jersey for the surrender of Jacob Weiss, identified as a fugitive from justice. Roosevelt further records that he had issued a warrant authorizing Weiss’s delivery to David V. Weckstein, the agent appointed by the demanding state.
The document is boldly signed “Franklin D. Roosevelt” at lower right and countersigned by the Counsel to the Governor, apparently Edward G. Griffin. The large embossed gold Privy Seal of the State of New York remains affixed at lower left.
Roosevelt had been inaugurated governor on January 1, 1929, making this a fascinating artifact from the opening days of the political administration that placed him on the road to the White House. As president from 1933 until his death in 1945, Roosevelt guided the United States through the Great Depression and most of World War II and became the only American president elected to four terms.
