Cal Hubbard Signed Check—1963, Only Member of Both Baseball and Pro Football Halls of Fame
An original cancelled personal check boldly signed by Robert Calvin “Cal” Hubbard, the extraordinary athlete and umpire who remains the only person inducted into both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Drawn on the First National Bank of Milan, Missouri, the check is dated August 17, 1963, made payable to “Cash” for $25 and signed at lower right, “Cal Hubbard.” The reverse carries dated bank processing stamps establishing that it cleared through the banking system.
The date is especially noteworthy. Hubbard entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of its inaugural class in 1963, making this a Hall of Fame-year autograph signed only weeks before the first enshrinement ceremony.
Hubbard starred as a tackle and end for the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers, winning four NFL championships and earning recognition as one of the greatest linemen of his era. He later became a celebrated American League umpire, working four World Series and helping establish the modern four-man umpiring system. He entered the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976.
